How Trauma Therapy Helps People Heal From the Past

28/Jun/2026

Most people carry a version of trauma therapy in their head that looks something like a dimly lit office, a patient lying on a leather couch staring at the ceiling, a therapist in a chair nearby with a legal pad and a series of probing questions.

Thoughtful, perhaps, but not exactly dynamic.

Real trauma therapy looks nothing like that image, and the gap between the myth and the reality explains why so many people put off getting help… and why those who do get help are often astonished by how effective it is.

At Inspire Counseling Group, our licensed therapists in Encino, CA use evidence-based methods that are active, structured, and clinically powerful. Ours is targeted and professional treatment that produces real and measurable results. Here is what that actually looks like.

What Trauma Does to the Brain

Trauma does not just leave emotional scars; it physically changes the way the brain stores and processes memory.

Traumatic experiences get lodged in the nervous system in an unprocessed form, which is why they resurface as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional reactions that feel completely disconnected from the present moment.

The brain, here, is doing exactly what it is meant to do… It just needs professional help to finish the process.

This is why a skilled psychology therapist does not simply ask you to talk about what happened and hope that helps. They use clinical techniques specifically designed to help the brain complete what trauma interrupted, to process the memory and file it where it belongs: in the past.

If trauma has been running your present and hindering your future, then contact Inspire Counseling Group to change that.

The Methods That Make Trauma Therapy Work

The American Psychological Association recommends several evidence-based approaches for trauma treatment, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) helps clients identify and challenge the beliefs that trauma has distorted (about safety, trust, control, and self-worth. A licensed psychologist guides this process with the client to examine those beliefs and replace them with more accurate, less damaging ones.
  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy works by gradually and safely bringing clients into contact with the memories and situations their trauma has made them avoid. Research shows that the average patient treated with Prolonged Exposure fared better than 86% of patients in control conditions on PTSD symptoms by the end of treatment.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is one of the most remarkable tools in modern trauma therapy as it helps clients reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer carry the same negative impact.

What all of these methods share is active engagement from the therapist. At Inspire Counseling, we boast psychological treatment that is a collaborative and clinical process… not a passive one.
